The Village Bowls Club is working towards creating a new pavilion that will serve not just the club, but the whole village. The aim is to develop a welcoming community hub centred around sport, social activity and general wellbeing, open and accessible to everyone.
Bowls continues to be a popular activity in the village, offering gentle physical exercise, friendly competition and, just as importantly, an opportunity for people to socialise. It has proved particularly valuable for residents in their 70s and 80s, helping to maintain both physical and mental health. Matches, open days and fundraising events regularly bring together players, supporters and villagers, strengthening community ties. With the closure of the village pub in January 2024, the bowls club has become an even more important focal point for local social life.
The club itself has faced significant challenges in recent years. In 2020, the previous owners, Greene King, placed the site on the market, putting the club’s future at risk. Thanks to a combination of grants — particularly from The Lottery, Sport England, — donations, parish council support, and extensive fundraising by members and villagers, the club successfully purchased the site, along with the land behind it. Since then, several improvements have been completed, including a new access road, car park and accessible toilet block. These developments were supported financially by public bodies and locally through generous community and member contributions.
Fundraising has included race nights, whist drives, open gardens, club open days and other community events - all well supported. One open day alone attracted around 200 visitors, while an open garden event welcomed more than 50 people. These activities have not only raised funds but also helped build a strong sense of community involvement.
The next phase is to replace the current pavilion, which is no longer fit for purpose. The existing building, erected, second-hand, in 1960, is too small and cannot be extended. It has rotten structural timbers, no proper foundations, a cracked and uneven floor, rusted windows, no heating or drainage and limited accessibility. There is insufficient space for teams to change or for post-match refreshments. Last season, players had to change under a temporary marquee in cold and windy weather, which offered little privacy and was far from ideal.
The proposed new pavilion will comfortably accommodate two bowling teams (24 players) with space for equipment and changing. A separate area will allow tables and chairs to be set out for refreshments after matches, and the building will include a small licensed bar and kitchen for preparing food and washing up.
The estimated capital cost of the new building is £67,500. The design is for a timber-frame structure on a concrete base with timber boarding and a pitched roof. Timber construction has been chosen for its sustainability, value for money and practicality. Importantly, many club members have the skills required to undertake much of the work themselves. This was demonstrated during construction of the new toilet facilities, where members contributed more than 1,200 hours of volunteer labour, including groundwork, timber framing, fitting out and decorating. The same approach will be taken for the new pavilion, including demolition of the existing building, helping to keep costs down.
The completed pavilion will provide a much-needed facility for sport, social events and community activities. The site sits at the heart of the village and, together with the recently built toilet block, will create an attractive traditional pavilion that residents can be proud of. The bowls club is also the only open space in the village with ample parking and accessible toilets, making it ideal for wider community use. The site has already supported events such as Open Gardens, Jubilee and Coronation celebrations, and visiting sports teams, and this will continue.
The club is registered with HMRC as a Community Amateur Sports Club, reinforcing its commitment to community benefit.
If you are able to support the project, donations of any size would be greatly appreciated and will help us create a lasting facility for the whole village.
